Which factors affect the maximum weight limit on an e-scooter?

There are a few factors that can determine the weight limit of an electric scooter. Gaining a more in-depth understanding of what these components are can help you make a more informed decision when buying an electric scooter for a heavy adult. At The E-Scooter Co. we always want you to make the best possible purchase for you, which is why we have summarised below some things to bear in mind to contextualise your options.

  • Motor/battery power - Electric scooters that tend to be suited to heavier adults often have two motors to provide additional power. This is not a necessary requirement, however, and a motor with 300W or higher should be powerful enough. Do not be fooled by cheaper scooters, as in this case weaker battery capacity and a smaller motor will be to your disadvantage.
  • Scooter frame - Avoid flimsy scooter frame builds, as the sturdiness of the frame will affect the amount of weight the scooter can carry. Look for high-quality models that have been built with strong and durable materials.
  • Braking power - It is important to prioritise the braking capacity of an e-scooter, as a bigger load will mean longer braking distances at higher speeds.  It is worthwhile to bear in mind that stopping distances will be affected by weather, terrain, visibility and response time.

  • Handlebar height - Height is also a factor, alongside weight. If the handlebar on your scooter is too low this will damage your posture, forcing you to hunch over. This is uncomfortable and makes the scooter harder to control - the handlebar should sit approximately between your hips and waist. Most e-scooters have an adjustable handlebar, however, if your model does not then it might be worth investing in a handlebar extender for more stability and comfort.

Here at The E-Scooter Co, we recognise that electric scooters can be a sizeable expenditure. We want you to be happy with the right electric scooter for you - so we hope this guide will help you to find the ideal e-scooter for heavier adults.
